Portland Japanese Garden

The Portland Japanese Garden is widely regarded as one of the most authentic outside of Japan. Curator Emeritus Sadafumi Uchiyama said, "We see our Japanese garden as a depository of all kinds of emotions... Everyone is a human being. Language, cultural background, and ethnicity doesn't matter. We provide the essential experience of being a human being in harmony with nature. We try to bring human beings closer to that harmony."

Together with world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma & Associates, we expanded the Cultural Crossing Village in 2017, envisioning new structures that would deepen the garden's ability to share Japanese culture, all while maintaining a profound connection to nature. And we're incredibly proud that Vitrocsa's advanced sliding window systems were integral to realizing this vision.

Kuma's design for the new "Cultural Village" draws inspiration from Japan's monzenmachi, the traditional gate-front towns that historically surround sacred sites. These three LEED-certified buildings integrate flawlessly into the landscape, embodying the core belief that nature should always be central to the architectural concept.

As with our work on other notable projects, Goldbrecht's dedication to minimalist aesthetics and expansive glass panels was essential for Kuma's architectural objectives. The exceptionally slim frames of the Vitrocsa sliding windows allow copious natural light to fill the interiors, forging clear visual pathways to the serene gardens outside.

Blending contemporary architecture with time-honored Japanese design demanded fenestration solutions that were both discreet and exceptionally performant. Goldbrecht's commitment to precision engineering guarantees these windows not only elevate the Cultural Village's architectural integrity but also endure the Pacific Northwest's often challenging weather.

With its thoughtful layout and deep reverence for its natural surroundings, this project stands as a powerful example of architectural harmony - a flowing, accessible community space that truly embraces its environment.

Goldbrecht consistently strives to offer exclusive features and expand the possibilities in fenestration. By integrating systems such as these, we continue to develop the industry further, creating transformations of power that transcend the boundaries of architecture.
