SL2 House

In the serene landscape of Santa Monica Canyon, a unique family home stands as a powerful testament to the union of architecture and nature. This is the 'Vertical Courtyard House,' a personal residence and a living portfolio for its designer, David Montalba, founding principal of Montalba Architects. The home is an embodiment of his professional ethos, where thoughtful design, meticulous material selection, and a deep respect for the environment shape everyday life.

Montalba's design was directly influenced by the challenging yet beautiful site. Rather than building outward, the home rises vertically across three stories, translating the traditional courtyard typology into a dynamic, upward-reaching structure. Two wings, connected by a light-filled bridgeway, create a sense of both connection and pause, accommodating the needs of a young family while maintaining a constant dialogue with the canyon's unique microclimate. The Vitrocsa Invisible Wall systems play a pivotal role in dissolving the boundaries between the interior and the landscape.

For David Montalba, the selection of the window system was critical. As he explains, "Thinking about how one engages the indoor and outdoor, I think this idea of a window frame that just really dissipates is a really powerful tool for us as designers and architects. The selection of the windows was really important for us and is on all of our projects."

Given the need for a system that could pocket away seamlessly to create an uninterrupted indoor-outdoor experience, Vitrocsa was the clear choice. "We needed the right pocket to really allow the windows to pocket away and be seamless. Vitrocsa certainly was able to do it." The collaboration extended to even the smallest details, with a custom locking lever designed specifically for the project. "As an architect, we not only design our home, we also design our practice and our lifestyle and I think it's really enjoyable to be able to fold those ideas that you believe in into the way you live your life. I think that's both grounding and humbling and certainly most exciting."

The Vertical Courtyard House stands as a powerful example of how a home can be a living expression of personal and professional beliefs, where an intimate understanding of light, air, and texture creates a space that is not only a refuge but a profound connection to its place and its people.
