Architectural Spotlight: Hale Lana in Kona, Hawaii

When designing on a vast landscape of raw lava fields and dense tropical gardens, architecture must do more than inhabit the earth. It has to hover over it. For Hale Lana—a breathtaking 17,211-square-foot family retreat on Hawaii's Big Island designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig—the goal was to balance absolute structural enclosure with total transparency. Translated as "floating home," this masterpiece appears to glide weightlessly above the terrain. We are proud that our Vitrocsa minimalist fenestration systems were selected to bring this expansive, canopy-inspired vision to life.

The estate takes a masterful position at the ecotone line, where heavily landscaped gardens meet endless views stretching across the ocean to the Haleakal? volcano on nearby Maui. Olson Kundig composed the estate as five distinct, canopy-like pavilions linked by elevated wooden lanais.

Architectural Fluidity: The Vitrocsa Sliding Wall Systems

To capture the "velvet air" and trade wind breezes of the Kona coast, the pavilions needed to open completely to the environment without any physical interruption. Traditional bulky window profiles would break the continuity of Kundig's precise design. By utilizing Vitrocsa's ultra-slim profiles, featuring an uncompromised 3/4" (18mm) vertical sightline, the home achieves total visual transparency while maintaining high-performance structural boundaries.

The design relies heavily on our specialized system configuration to meet the site's unique environmental demands:

- Vitrocsa Sliding Systems: The main house and surrounding pavilions are wrapped entirely in monumental, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls. These expansive glass units glide back effortlessly on high-capacity internal rollers, transforming entire rooms into open-air pavilions that transition smoothly onto the covered timber decks.

When the glass doors are fully retracted, the interior wood-plank ceilings connect seamlessly with the underside of the massive cantilevered roof canopies, creating an unbroken plane of sight and shelter. Operable wood shutter screens run on parallel tracks outside the glass, allowing the family to micro-tune the exposure to sun, air, and privacy without altering the clean architectural lines.

High-Performance Engineering for Pacific Environments

Beyond its delicate, floating aesthetic, a structure open to direct Pacific trade winds requires exceptional technical engineering. High-end island residential architecture demands absolute precision. The Vitrocsa systems implemented at Hale Lana are engineered to deliver robust structural resistance against tropical weather and corrosive salt air while providing effortless, weightless functionality day after day.

This project demonstrates Goldbrecht's dedication to pushing the limits of modern fenestration. By collaborating with elite architectural firms like Olson Kundig, we continue to dissolve structural boundaries, creating iconic homes that celebrate the natural world.
