Edgewood House in Palo Alto, California
When modernizing a historic mid-century structure, architecture must balance preservation with the evolving functional needs of its inhabitants. For Edgewood House, a 1950s Joseph Eichler home transformed by the Berkeley-based team at Terry & Terry Architecture, the design challenge went far beyond a standard renovation. The dwelling was reimagined for a young Deaf family requiring an expanded, open layout prioritizing visual communication, touch, and clear sightlines throughout the property. We are proud that our Vitrocsa minimalist glass systems by Goldbrecht were chosen to bring this highly specialized, sensitive design to life.

The residence occupies a prime footprint in Palo Alto, where the iconic horizontal lines of classic California modernism meet lush, manicured landscape design. Terry & Terry Architecture masterfully expanded the original single-story home both horizontally and vertically, folding out the planes of the ground floor to form a striking new second-story bedroom wing. To anchor this dynamic structural transformation, the design utilizes poured-in-place concrete masses and sweeping roof overhangs to provide shade, protection, and programmatic balance.

Architectural Transparency: The Vitrocsa Invisible Wall Systems
To fulfill the clients' need for absolute visual awareness and seamless orientation, the main living quarters required an architectural envelope that completely eliminates traditional structural barriers. Conventional, thick window framing would interrupt lines of sight between family members moving through different zones of the property. By introducing Vitrocsa's advanced sliding wall systems, featuring our signature 3/4" (18mm) vertical profile, the core living spaces achieve maximum transparency while staying firmly anchored within high-performance boundaries.

The architectural layout orchestrates a fluid transition across the primary indoor and outdoor zones:
- The Main Living Pavilion: The expansive, open-plan ground floor is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling Vitrocsa sliding glass walls. These ultra-slim glass installations spatially open the core of the home directly to the property's pool area, courtyard, and curated gardens.
- Indoor-Outdoor Spatial Awareness: When retracted, the flush, recessed floor tracks allow the interior flooring to transition into outdoor terraces without a physical threshold. This design choice creates a continuous plane of sight, enabling effortless visual connection across the entire site.

High-Performance Engineering for Eco-Conscious Living
Beyond its weightless aesthetic and communicative purpose, Edgewood House stands as a definitive model for sustainable, high-performance residential design. A modern renovation of this caliber demands advanced engineering to meet rigorous environmental criteria while ensuring effortless, everyday functionality.
The Vitrocsa systems by Goldbrecht implemented throughout the property are precision-engineered to deliver exceptional thermal efficiency and acoustic insulation. The home integrates photovoltaic panels, solar water heating, and rain catchment systems directly into its folded roof forms. Our minimalist sliding systems complement these green building strategies by maximizing indirect natural daylighting, significantly reducing the home's overall reliance on artificial electricity. Recessed cleanly into the structural plates, the tracks remain hidden from view, ensuring the glass effectively disappears while operating with weightless precision under deep canopy overhangs.

This project stands as a prime example of Goldbrecht's commitment to pushing the technical boundaries of modern fenestration. By collaborating with forward-thinking design firms like Terry & Terry Architecture, we continue to dissolve structural boundaries, creating custom homes that honor their history while elevating the lives of those inside.
